St. John of God Community Services Malawi

Together we are stronger.

The Elderly program provides medical check-ups, food plots to grow vegetables and traditional dancing and singing classes. Those who are too frail to attend are visited by a St. John of God social worker for assessment.

The elderly program was set up due to the lack of care offered to older people in Malawi. The clinic also supports older people who are having to care for their grandchildren because of losing their own children to the AIDS epidemic.

The elderly programme supports 130 older people in Mzuzu. Support is provided through weekly meetings the aim of which is to improve the quality of life for the elderly through the provision of psychosocial services, facilitation of access to health services, advocacy and networking.

Programme Objectives

1) Provide assessment, facilitate treatment and management of health issues experienced by our elderly citizens
2) Provide psychosocial services that enhance resilience and reduce psychological and emotional distress
3) Enhance the quality of life through the provision of recreational, educational and social network enhancement programmes
4) Elder abuse intervention
