Sensory input and opportunities to mobilise outside of wheelchairs are essential. The on-site swimming pool previously provided a safe, accessible, and efficient way to meet these needs. Since closing during COVID-19, the impact has been significant. Off-site sessions take up to half a day for just 40 minutes of swimming, limiting meaningful, person-centred activities. The Islandbridge pool was purpose-built, fully accessible, and includes suitable changing facilities—unlike many community pools, where limited accessible spaces cause delays. The heated pool supports muscle relaxation, mobility, and multidisciplinary therapy in a low-impact environment. It also offers important physical and mental health benefits through a flexible sensory space. An on-site pool provides consistency and reliability, unlike off-site sessions which depend on transport availability. It also allows staff to use their time more efficiently. Previously, the pool was a shared and highly valued resource across services, with strong engagement. Below are images of the current pool, which is no longer fit for purpose. Once the pool is repaired, it will be open to the community on weekends. Manage Cookie Preferences
